Ambiance
Ambiance is a game design that involves placing buildings of different ambient qualities to influence the citizens that inhabit them.
Qualities like Freedom/Confinement, Industrial/Natural, Communal/Individual all balance against their opposing force, and combine to influence different aspects of citizen behavior, like how much time they spend in locations, if they form groups, how they move through a space, and so on.
Its sort of an architectural toy, placing buildings from a basic set and combining different ambiance to see how the citizen react to them, how they carry that ambiance around with them, and how it can change your city. As you expand the size of your city, you gain access to larger buildings. As you build more levels of certain types of ambiance, you unlock buildings in that type. As you obtain certain combinations of ambiance, you unlock specialty buildings that cater to that type of combination.
